Whose Data Is It Anyway?

Bad customer service

Short answer? Yours. Long answer? Also yours.

But you’d be surprised how many agencies conveniently “forget” that and hold your Google Analytics, CRM, or ad accounts hostage the moment you think about leaving. They’ll say it’s complicated. It’s not.

The Classic Move

When it’s time to leave, suddenly:

  • You lose access to your analytics.
  • They claim your ad data is proprietary.
  • You’re told the CRM isn’t transferable.

Spoiler: none of that is true.

Why They Do It

Because control equals leverage. And data is power.

If you don’t have access to the performance metrics, lead lists, or customer insights, you’re flying blind. And that’s exactly how some agencies like it.

Data review

What You Should Always Own

  • Google Analytics & GA4 access (admin level)
  • Google Search Console access
  • Google Ads or Facebook Ads account ownership
  • CRM platforms and contact databases

These are your tools, your metrics, your insights—not theirs to gatekeep.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Use your own email for account setup: Never let an agency be the only admin.
  2. Request full access in writing: From day one, define what “ownership” really means.
  3. Download your data regularly: Back up reports and export contact lists.
  4. Ask questions: If anything seems hidden, it probably is.

Digital Rebel’s Take

We don’t just give you access. We show you how to use it. Because what good is data if you’re not empowered to understand it?
